As Trump leads a top-down assault against trans people, we are also witnessing a wider cultural awareness of trans people and their issues, undoubtedly driven by a mix of activism, media representation, and personal encounters. Much like the struggle for gay and lesbian rights in recent years, the struggle for trans acceptance and rights has greatly intensified, resulting in some limited progress during the Obama years and horrific backlash under Trump.
