Her feelings show that Briony lets herself to get involved in Lola’s case not because she actually cares about Lola and wants to help, but because she wants attention and praises from others by acting as an important witness. But “her vital role fueled her certainty” by accusing Robbie and sending him to jail, Briony feels “sweet and inward rapture” and is “energized now by a sense of doing and being good, on the point of springing a surprise that could only earn her praise” (McEwan 163 168 165). For instance, when Lola is sexually assaulted, it is none of Briony’s business to identify the offender and to testify him, especially when Briony cannot really tell who the offender is. She has always been an egomaniac who is self-centered and egotistical. Throughout the book Briony does not grow up at all even after she has experienced a series of life-changing events. In Ian McEwan’s Atonement, Briony’s atonement to Robbie and Cecilia is completely unsuccessful because of her failed character development, selfish actions, and misunderstanding of atonement. It is also crucial to understand the needs and wants of the one you are atoning for because an atonement is successful only if you are able to please them. One important element of atonement is that everything you do must be under the permission of the one you are atoning for. Atonement is the action of making up what you did wrong in order to receive forgiveness the process includes apologizing to the ones you hurt and compensating them.
